Dirt, Sex and Greed is a unique and important explanation of sexual ethics in the New Testament of the Bible and their implications for today. It is a bit of a dense, thorough read, but the content is paradigm-shattering in the very best way.

This book was incredibly freeing for me to read, it was life changing to really understand what God was Cited by: Dirt Greed & Sex book.

Read 5 reviews from the world's largest community for readers. This new revised edition, of the landmark text, includes updat /5. Great book.

Provides explanations of biblical interpretation WITH much needed context of intent in the time it was written, as well as the cultural implications and law of the time.

Can be super dry at times, but definitely a must-read for anyone looking to understand biblical ethics, especially those related to sex in the 21st by: William Countryman, Dirt, Greed, and Sex, Fortress This book is a brilliant and challenging survey of New Testament sexual ethics.

What is unique about it (at least in my experience) is that it approaches these issues, not through the grid of our own modern approach to such matters but seeks to reconstruct the grid which those in the world of the NT would have used. Rather than relying on Dirt, Greed and Sex, the pastor, teacher, student, and Christian layperson would do far better to study such authors as Richard Lovelace (Homosexuality and the Church), Stanley Grenz (Sexual Ethics), and Gordon Wenham (The Book of Leviticus).

"Liberals," however, sometimes found Dirt, Greed, and Sex perplexing; they could not figure out why anyone would spend that much energy on what the Bible says about sex. And the more partisan sorts of "conservatives" immediately dismissed the book's conclusions because they did not square with their predetermined reading of the Bible.

By L. William Countryman. Fortress Press,pp. Publication Date: October 1. Dirt, Greed and Sex is one of the most influential studies published in recent times on the subject of sexual ethics.

Discussing biblical notions of purity and property, which dominate ethical ideas in the New Testament, the author characterises sex as one of the rich blessings of creation, `to be received with delight and thanksgiving' Countryman's generous and eirenic views on sexual /5(6).‘Dirt’ represents how sexual practices regarded as impure are seen; ‘greed’ denotes a failure to respect the sexual property of others.

Clearly these are important concepts for understanding the biblical material in its cultural context, and Countryman analyses many scriptural passages in a fresh and interesting way.Dirt, Greed, and Sex: Sexual Ethics in the New Testament and Their Implications for Today is an academic examination of scriptural ethics.

The author, William Countryman surveys purity issues as they pertain to both the old and New Testament. His effort is academic and thorough, but a bit misguided as it nears the end/5(6).
